40 Years of Dedication - Thank you Mr Yazawa

Posted Jan. 26, 2005 Prep wrestling: 40 years of grapplers honor longtime Denmark coach Yazawa
By Terry Anderson tanderso@greenbaypressgazette.com
DENMARK — When Stan Yazawa started coaching high school wrestling at Denmark High School in 1965, Lyndon Johnson was president, Elvis was King and Dick the Bruiser was a professional wrestling legend whose antics sufficiently captivated youngsters to become interested in the real sport.
Forty years on, Yazawa has made a mark on a school, a community and a sport. On Tuesday, in conjunction with parents’ night, the Denmark Wrestling Club held a surprise party to honor Yazawa. Many of the 311 wrestlers who grappled for the Vikings the past four decades were on hand to honor their coach.
“God really blessed us when he sent us Stan,” said Tom Dworak, who wrestled in the late 1970s and now watches his son Brandon wrestle for the Vikings. “There was never any question that as much as Coach Yazawa cared about wrestling, school came first.” “Stan Yazawa was the single most inspirational person in my life,” declared Mike Denor, who is the assessor for several Brown County communities. “At that time (high school), I was small and didn’t have a lot going for me. Even though Stan was a man of few words, he had that quality to get the best from you. I never wanted to let him down.” “As hard as he was as a coach, he was even harder as a teacher,” added Jerry Blohowiak. “And he expected more from his wrestlers.” Not hard in an unfair way, but always demanding, Blohowiak added.
Several of the former wrestlers recalled team conversations in the “garbage room.” It was a room in the old elementary school where garbage was stored, but doubled as a meeting room for the wrestling squad. “We would talk about philosophy and life,” Mike Heim said. “We made a lot of friendships, learned a lot of life-long values.” Jitter Van Groll, who wrestled in the 1970s and whose son Jake is a sophomore wrestler, said Yazawa loves wrestling, and that passion has been passed on to his wrestlers. “I just hope that he stays until Jake graduates,” Van Groll said. And it wasn’t just “old-timers” who came out to honor Yazawa on Tuesday. Lance Larsen, class of 2000, said Yazawa’s insistence on doing things right was a lesson that transcended the sport. Honors aren’t new to Yazawa, who retired two years ago after teaching English at Denmark for 37 years.
A decade ago, he was inducted into the George Martin Wrestling Hall of Fame, and two years ago, entered the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame as an assistant coach. Yazawa grew up on Maui in Hawaii, where he played football, baseball and track in high school. He wasn’t introduced to wrestling until he took a physical education class at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in the early 1960s. “I can honestly say that Stan Yazawa made me a better person,” said Len Shefchick, who has been an assistant wrestling coach for 21 years and helped to organize the event. “I came in my mid 30s and benefited from the consistent, disciplined environment that he fostered.” The normally stoic Yazawa was clearly touched by the surprise honors. When offered a chance to offer a few remarks, he reflected on his own mentor, former head football coach Jerry Leiterman, for whom he was assistant for 32 years, and who he died a year ago. “I know he’s up there, looking down and saying to himself: ‘that dumb Hawaiian. Why did he come to Wisconsin and why did he stay so long?’ “ A moment later, Yazawa answered the question: “I never planned to stay so long. I figured I’d stay 10 years and move back to Hawaii or California. But I made a lot of good friends. And once you’ve made friends, you’ve got roots and you stay.”
